“Coffee beans come all the way from South America and Africa. Our shop is just a brief stopover for the beans, and our role is to help them connect with their drinkers.”

This is part of a conversation in the Japanese movie “Saihate Nite -Yasashii Kaori to Machinagara (At the farthest corner of the world – Waiting with gentle aroma)”. To me, these words seem to capture the role of a roaster and barista. As a coffee professional myself, I’ve had a vague sense that visiting coffee origins in South America and Africa will help me better convey their atmosphere and the personalities of the producers to my customers. After all, you can only learn so much from books and other media.

The chance to go to Ethiopia with TYPICA Lab came as a surprise, and it took me a while to fully grasp the opportunity. But now that I’ve been speaking online to the other roasters from South Korea who will also be on the trip, it’s beginning to sink in. I look forward to not only gaining new insights but also sharing them with other roasters and producers from around the world

I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity. My hope is that the texts and photos I will share during my trip will be of some help to someone, even if only in a small way.

As I prepare to embark on this journey to explore coffee origins, I would like to conclude this prologue post by saying that I hope to gain a more clear understanding of coffee origins through this trip, and that my hopes for the future of coffee will become closer to reality as a result.
