Things have gone smoothly without any trouble so far. But driving over rough, unpaved roads is starting to take a toll on my body.

Then the hosts threw an open-air bar party for us under the night sky, as if to soothe our fatigue. Having an occasion like this with these friends pumps me up.

We had a campfire on top of a hill where there are Geisha trees. I sat down on a large rock. It was hot from the heat that’s been accumulated over the course of the day under the African sun. I laid down on that rock and looked up at the night sky. I was surrounded by countless stars, a beautiful sky full of stars like nothing I’ve ever seen in my life. Everyone leapt with joy like a child, saying out loud “The Earth is really round!”

Seeing this powerful, spiritual sky full of stars alone made the trip worthwhile.

I’m on my first origin trip in three and a half years. I was a little nervous during my preparations. It’s been just 24 hours since we left Japan, and now we have arrived at our first destination, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

I breathe in the arid, dusty air of Africa.

“The soil here is really red.”

I’m looking forward to seeing what this trip has to offer.

I’m traveling to the first destination, Tanzania.

I’ve been so busy preparing for the trip that it didn’t seem real that I’m actually going to visit coffee origins. But now I’m feeling more and more excited after coming to the airport and talking with other roasters.

Off I go!!

Prologue

I took the attached photo when I visited a coffee origin for the first time, thought about the meaning of buying their coffees and came up with my answer at that time.

There was clear abundance there, and that was the abundance I didn’t have.

I wanted to get to the bottom of that abundance. If I get deeper into it, that abundance may turn out to be an illusion.

I debated myself. But I still want to know, I still need to feel, I thought.

This is the prologue of my story of why I make coffee my life’s work and visit coffee origins.
